I woke up at 5 am, ready to do some rooftop worship with a few squadmates. I climbed up the rusty ladder to the roof, sat down on the shingles, and just looked and listened to the city. It was dark, but the city began slowly lighting up as the Muslim call to prayer began. I could hear from miles away the men walking up and down the streets, singing a loud, unsettling chant. Everything felt eery.
I became very discouraged. I tried to imagine what Jesus would be thinking at this moment. I couldn’t stop thinking of the thousands of lost people, the unloving gods they worshipped, the lack of true hope and sustaining power in them, and the sin they all still carried. Poverty and hunger overtakes them. Trash piles are their beds. Dying dogs and people lie on the sides of the streets. Their clothes are torn. Their eyes are dull. Their children are sick.
We can’t walk down the street without a barrage of beggars grabbing our clothes and pointing to their children’s stomachs.
Despite all this, God is still moving here. God is still just as present in us here as He is at home. We began to sing songs of worship to the Lord. We cried His name and sang of how good He is. I couldn’t hear the Muslim call to prayer over the loud praises we were giving the Lord. Even just a few foreigners sitting on a rooftop singing praises to our Father as the rest of the city around us prayed to a god who wasn’t there can bring His presence to a city. He has not left us nor forsaken us, and His kingdom is wherever we are. My prayer is that He continues to bring me to the places that need His kingdom the most so that He can pour down His light on every land I walk through.
Update: I’m living in India! I am incredibly fascinated by the culture and the work God is doing here! My ministry is with sweet little girls to give them a place to learn more English, learn about the Gospel, have a safe place away from the streets, and have some food to eat! I love them and I love the work God is going to do in them as they grow up! Please pray for their safety and for God to use their lives as a testament to His goodness! Please pray that they remember for the rest of their lives the stories and prayers we teach them. Thank you for the prayers and the support!
Much love to all!
