It’s Thanksgiving yet it does not seem like November in any way. Here in Zimbabwe it is over 90 degrees, no turkeys are on display, apple pie is not being prepared in our kitchen and there’s not a Black Friday ad in site. It’s honestly been a bit depressing being so far away from home during a season like this BUT it’s also made me take a step back and realize how important it is to be thankful regardless of anything else going on around me (cliche, I know, but still true).

When I was in a state of homesickness, a wise person named Brenda Hooker (otherwise known as mom), once said/texted, “I’m sure it will all work out. Thanksgiving is being with people you love and being thankful for what God has given us.”

While it’s a simple statement, it is true on every level. This Thanksgiving I am surrounded by the most wonderful people. My team is one that overflows with love, laughter, thoughtfulness, yo-yoing, silly dinner conversations, and so much more. They have enabled me to experience a whole new side of God, and they’ve taught me how beneficial community can be.

I’m also feeling super thankful for life itself. Today me, Stella, and Lindsay had the opportunity to visit a women’s college. We did a bible study over Esther 4 and talked about pursing our calling and walking in courage. We got to visit and encourage girls that are legitimately striving to be environmentalists, geologists, doctors, the President, and more. To say I was inspired would be downplaying it. The fire those girls held within themselves was deeply rooted in the Holy Spirit and seeing them light up about education and their future was beautiful.

So Thanksgiving looks a little different this year. It’s not loading up on green beans, ham, and apple pie surrounded by my family. It will most likely look like eating out and going to see a movie after ministry with my team. Regardless, I know I am surrounded by people I love and who love me. My family is on the other side of the world, but I’m still more than grateful for them (also shoutout to the fam because I love and miss them dearly).

I’m incredibly thankful for the things that God has given me this year. In the past two and a half months I’ve had the chance to live in three countries, learn about God’s insane faithfulness, and witness His glory in ways I once only dreamed about. Some days are extremely hard and taxing, yes, but the growth that comes from those days is also the biggest blessing. So as for now, I’m just resting in thankfulness (still a work in progress though) and keeping my mom’s sweet wisdom in mind.

Xoxo,
Emily
