Last month, I had the chance to learn how to cook Sri Lankan style with a lovely woman named Banduwathie, also known as “Mama.” This woman was so sweet ! Mama has been married for over forty years. She has 5 daughters and 1 son. She has 7 grandchildren. She’s lived in Mirissa for practically her whole life. She owns the Randi GuestHouse where we stayed for 2 weeks. During our stay there, I had an interest in getting to know her a little more. We were in the kitchen and she was telling me what she made for breakfast that morning. I told her it looked great. “You cook with me,” she told me. I replied ” Of course.” She offered me cooking lessons in exchange for teaching her English. Everyday her and I would speak, even if it was briefly or over a meal.

I was able to share with her my faith in Christ while she shared with me her faith in Buddha. Banduwathie loves to cook and you can see it in her face. She just lights up. She told me  she loves to see people’s reactions to her cooking because they always say it’s delicious. They’re right. Mama’s food is so tasty! I can’t wait to try to cook the recipe for rice and curry when I get back to the states. I enjoyed every single minute I got to share with this precious woman and will miss her very much.

Enjoy this little video I made of her. Mama I hope you’re watching !

Blessings xoxo
