Thailand has been an amazing month. We have partnered with a great ministry called The Haven Foundation. They have many projects within the foundation and one that we have spent some time working with is working with the Burmese refugees, especially the children that have been displaced as a product of the ongoing civil war in Burma.

This particular week we worked with coordinators of the Haven Foundation to run multiple hygiene clinics for refugee children. These clinics took place at two different schools. We each had a station that we ran that taught the importance of personal hygiene in a kid friendly way!

Brad ran a station about wound care. He taught the kids how to clean their scratches and cuts properly. It was a hit, especially because they got to use ketchup for fake blood.

Janine taught the kids about proper hygiene when it comes to bathing. The places to make sure you get especially clean, and they used baby dolls to practice scrub-a-dubbing.

Daniel ran a station about teeth brushing and the importance of making it a daily habit.

My station was about physical activity and the importance of taking care of our bodies. I did children’s yoga with them, and we had SO MUCH FUN.

Carla read the hungry catipillar to the kids and talked about healthy foods versus unhealthy foods.

Jack ran a station about food that is good for your body and food that isn’t, they then played a relay game sorting the foods.

Jim ran a station about hydration and why it’s so important to drink enough water. He talked about all the ways our body looses water and why its so important to replenish our supply.

Tate ran a station about germs and the importance of hand washing. She had a black light and glow in the dark germ paste that illuminated under the light to show that we can’t see germs, but they are there so it’s important to wash.

While we were teaching the children about hygiene, the teachers were also getting health and wellness training from the doctor that coordinates the clinics.

After our clinic was over the teachers still had an afternoon session left, so we were in charge of the kids for the duration of the day. This was a great time to just hang out with them. We played duck duck goose (it was a hit), soccer, and let them teach us some of their games.

As school dismissed we gave care packages to all the children. These included toothbrushes, toothpaste, soy milk, soap, and baby powder. The kids LOVED these packets. They were so excited to take something home with them and begin implementing their new hygiene skills. Most of these children live at the local dump, and their parents work there picking out plastics for recycling. These little bag were so special to them, because its probably more than some of them have ever received.

One of my favorite things about the Race is the fact that ministry is always changing. We have gotten to opportunity to do so many different things, and this might be one of my favorites. We have to opportunity to come alongside organizations that have casted a vision to bring the Good News of Christ to unreached people in their countries by loving them well and meeting their needs.

James 1:27 states “Religion that God our father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
