Welcome to the adventure! Some of you may know me well, and others of you may not know me at all. Thanks or stopping by- make yourself at home!

This is the “About Me” section, so I suppose I should tell you a little bit about myself. Kudos to you if you already know everything listed here! ๐Ÿ˜›

My name is Sylvia Barrett. I grew up in the small town of Bethalto, IL with my mom, stepdad, and younger sister. I now live 2 hours north in the even smaller town of Mt. Sterling, IL. I am currently in the middle of my first year of teaching and I love it. It has not always been easy, but teaching is such a rewarding job and even as the teacher, I’ve done a lot of learning. I have laughed, learned, grown, and seen so much in just the past 6 months! My passion and calling for teaching, learning, and working with kids has been affirmed this past year and I am excited to see how God uses that on the race and in the future.

I love lists, so here is a list of random information:

  • I graduated from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville with a degree in Special Education with a minor in music.
  • God has given me a heart for working with children and adults with disabilities. I cannot imagine a better career and am blessed with the opportunities I have had to work with this population. They offer so much joy and I have learned more from them then I can even begin to teach them.
  • I find personality tests (Myers-Briggs) and Love Languages fascinating and think it is interesting to see where people fall on these. They provide great insight and conversations. If you were curious, here is where I fall:                                                              Love Languages: I show love best through quality time and acts of service. I receive love best through words of affirmation and quality time.                                   Myers-Briggs: Depending on the test, I alternate between scoring as an INFJ and ISFJ. Both results are surprisingly accurate.
  • I LOVE ice cream. I may have been known to have it for dinner a time or two. ๐Ÿ™‚
  • There is nothing better than diving into a good story-book or movie.
  • I am a sucker for a good cop or hospital show.
  • I love to laugh.
  • I play clarinet and saxophone.
  • I spent 3 months living in Vietnam. My experiences with the people there and my experiences with God while I was there deepened my heart for missions and travel.
  • I LOVE to travel. I love diving into a new place and meeting the people. There is so much to learn from diving into the authentic community of a new place. Next time you travel, see the real place. Stray from the tourist sites.
  • I am terrible at small talk. Ask me a deep question or let’s talk about life.
  • I am a horrible overthinker. This can be both good and bad.
  • Need something organized? I’m your gal.
  • I like to plan, but I also like to be spontaneous. I am a walking oxymoron. ๐Ÿ˜›
  • I spent the past 2 summers working with YouthWorks- a mission organization for teenagers. My experiences serving and leading with this group have grown me spiritually and practically. They have helped me show me and gain confidence in the gifts God has been given me and ways to use them. The communities I lived in, teams I have worked with, and youth I worked with have inspired me and helped to direct me to God’s plan to use me for ministry and missions at this point in my life.
  • I like to collect quotes.

“Laughter can really dissolve the distance between two or more people because our hearts all speak the same tongue, which is love: Irrespective of the language or the culture, a sincere laugh is unmistakably understood.”
