these are all images that i was able to capture of the aftermath of a massive “landfall” that killed over two hundred people while i was in Ethiopia

Ethiopia was a beautiful country to visit, not only did it have amazing people, but the food and coffee was worth flying there for alone

what we weren’t anticipating was the tragedy of the landfill accident. just outside of the capital of Addis Ababa, there is an area called Korah (or Koshe called by Ethiopians). it is said that chemicals buried under the mountainous pile of garbage were what caused the landfall to happen.  the mountain of trash exploded from within causing the top and middle, chunks of trash (“land”) fell apart and crushed hundreds of homes and killed those within them and around the area.

yes, homes on a trash dump.  people who found themselves poor and homeless became squatters here.  they built homes out of sticks and plastic on top of the piles.  oh how i wish i could have seen it all before it happened. to meet the people and see the ways of their life.

there were also homes, legal homes, made of concrete just on the outskirts of the dump and many were demolished as well during the tragedy.

look for yourself:

i’ve decided to let the pictures speak for themselves.
