“Test it.”
Those were the words I heard coming out of my mouth a few weeks ago, as I was having a random {but clearly God ordained} conversation with a woman I’d just met. We were both guests at a wedding in The Netherlands, and it was not the conversation I thought I’d be having that evening. We were talking about how I knew the bride, and how we’d just spent the previous year traveling and listening to the Lord’s voice. She said she had been trying to hear more from the Lord, but how could she be sure it was Him? And before I had a chance to think about it, I heard the Lord speaking through me. Words that He has written on my heart, but I often fail to realize how second nature they now come to me:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to TEST and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 NIV
Every person you have a relationship with, you grow to know the sound of their voice the more you are around them. The more the person talks to you, the more familiar you become with their ways of communicating—tone of voice, mannerisms, etc… We can do the same with hearing from the Lord! The more time spent with the Father, the more familiar His voice becomes. And back to my conversation with the woman I’d just met—you should TEST what you think you hear in order to KNOW if it is Him. Did He just ask you to stop and pray for that person? Do it and see what happens. Did He give you words of encouragement for another? Test it and see.
In my own walk, I’m doing the same. He has given me the opportunity for 9 months to walk alongside these beautiful children of His—and I had to step into it and TEST it to see if it was His voice I was hearing. After spending the past 2 weeks with these kiddos I’m confident this is where He is calling me for now!
