For a long time I wasn’t sure I carried a spirit of meekness and gentleness. I, like most of our culture, believed being meek was a weakness. That meekness and boldness couldn’t be cut from the same cloth- so naturally, I chose the “stronger” of the two. Boldness seemed far less vulnerable. Jesus said that the meek are Blessed and will inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5).
My mentor Kate told me about the app “Vine Expository Dictionary”. It gives definitions and the context of words throughout the bible. The definition of meekness below is from the app.
In the context of scripture meekness is defined as “consisting not in a person’s outward behavior only, nor in his relations to his fellow-men; as little in his mere natural disposition. Rather it is an inwrought grace of the soul; and the exercises of it are first and chiefly towards God. It is that temper of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as good, and therefore without disputing or resisting; it is closely linked with the word humility, and follows directly upon it.”
So when Jesus said the meek shall inherit the earth, He was saying that those who trust in God, walk in humility, are kind, and love Him will inherit the earth. Gentleness is a quality of wisdom from above, and surely I lack no good thing (Psalm 34:10). For every good and perfect gift is from the Father (James 1:17).
Don’t settle in believing lies about yourself. Turn to what the Lord says about you.
If you’re interested in learning more about other biblical definitions- download Vine Expository Dictionary. It’s seriously so good.
