What makes you come alive? Excited, passionate, intrigued? And No, the Sunday School answer is not what I want. Jesus, is the romancer of our souls and he should make you come alive but there should be more.
For the Blessed few that their passion is their job, you are Rocking IT! But, as for me (stateside me) and many other Americans work is a paycheck; for which you sacrifice your precious hours to afford to live.
But, today I found myself having 2 very different conversations that made me come alive.
The first was with Bill Covlens and I were talking about a show (Okay, it was an anime called Full Metal Alchemist). We talked about our favorite characters and analyzed story elements and how the author balanced Power and Religion. And at one point in this conversation I said, “I wish I could make a story like that.” I have a passion for Good story telling. And I can put ideas on paper. So, why not try writing.
Then a little later Tyler Nash and I were assisting in window installation and we started talking about sustainable architecture, hydro and aquaponics, and robotics. And once again I found passion in my voice (for sustainability and Hydro/aquaponics, Tyler likes the Robotics).
Tyler and I continued Talking we came to the fact that it takes 1,000 hours to master a skill and I have given at least 2 times that to Netflix and Videogames. That time could be producing fruit (and Vegetables Ha!) but instead I have video game Cheats and 8 seasons of Criminal Minds rattling around in my head.
I am not railing against leisure activities. They are needed Occasionally. But, like anything in life healthy self-governance is key. My warning is against Passivity. My Heart is for an Active Thriving Church. It could be knitting, rock climbing, gardening, furniture making, golf, or art of any kind. Find something and have fun with Life. And don’t fear failure. The easiest way to spread the Gospel is when you have a community OUTSIDE of the Church as well as Inside of it.
Like I said earlier our hours are precious use them well.
