As of today, we have officially been in Costa Rica for 2 weeks! Overall, our time here has been great! The first few days here were rough; we were sleeping in the hallway because there were two other teams here and very unsettled in our ministry. As we got to Costa Rica I had just the overwhelming feeling that I was inadequate and that I couldn’t do this whole 11 month thing. I was able to express these feelings to my team and just have them come alongside me and support me through it. Once we got settled into ministry and into a room that had a door, I was much better.
Our ministry this month is at Zoe International Christian School, and we are teaching. My teammate Jordie and I are teaching English, Science, and World History to a split grade classroom of 7th and 9th graders. We have two 7th graders and one 9th grader. While teaching is really outside of my comfort zone, I have enjoyed getting to pour into these students and teach them, especially science. Through this ministry there is also a church and a bible college. The church here is wonderful and they have been really intentional about pouring into us and helping us to become the best missionaries that we possibly can be.
The women on team Sonflower have become family to me, and I have really enjoyed getting to do life and ministry with them over the last 2 weeks and can’t wait to see what the next ten and half months hold. It is so refreshing to be a part of a group where everyone is focused on God and has the same calling on their life. I love being a part of this team where I can be completely honest and vulnerable with them, but we can also have a dance party in the kitchen or laugh about me falling in a puddle (yes that really happened).
It is currently rainy season here, so it rains everyday usually at about 2:30pm. I am super thankful that I bought a good raincoat for the race because that has been my most worn item of clothing so far. We have had to rig up clothes line in our room so that we can dry clothes even when it rains.
Overall, Costa Rica is great! I have built lots of relationships with people here, and am really enjoying the ministry. Please keep my team and my squad in your prayers as we have 18 days here in Costa Rica before we move onto Nicaragua for debrief and all squad month!
