My ring broke in half today.

I still remember the day I bought it. We went with our hosts from Heart for Africa in Swaziland. We went to get fresh veggies/fruits from a nearby market and stumbled upon a small artisan market.

I found a pair of earrings that were claimed to have boar hair in them. I never wore them.

I found this dainty, silver-colored ring. Really simple. I’ve worn it almost every day for 4.5 years.

It’s a type of metal that is malleable so it’s lost its shape over time. I just squeeze it back into place each time. It’s just part of it’s uniqueness. It’s misshapen and imperfect, but it’s mine.

I lost it once this past summer. I thought it was time to give it up. Maybe the Lord wanted someone else to have it. I let go, but He brought it back to me through someone else. It was a sweet gift. I guess my time with it wasn’t over.

I noticed yesterday that it wasn’t as tight as it had previously been. It wasn’t holding it’s shape as well. It wasn’t fitting me properly anymore.

I looked closer and the ring had cracked. It was loosing its strength, its ability to do what it was meant to do. Change was coming.

Maybe it’s time to let go. Maybe it’s time to let the old things break off.

New things are coming.

My ring broke today.
New things are here.
Sometimes there needs to be
A stripping away
To enter the new.
