Our last 5 days in Malaysia we were in the big city of Kuala Lumpur and worked with a church right in the middle of the bustling city.   Coming into the last 5 days we were unsure of what to expect.  The Church was on the 4th floor of a building with an old poster wallpaper from the 90’s.  I’m not sure what it was advertising, but it had a small family on it and someone had painted their mouths red so they looked like vampires.  We called it the vampire wall.  Pretty creepy!  Turns out that our main project would be to paint a mural on the wall.  We started brainstorming and were going to paint the fruits of the spirit or a rainbow of God’s creation, something simple.

After asking the pastor if it would be ok to tear down the vampire wall it was decided that we would do something more.  They had been praying and discussing a name for the church for the last year or so but where still unsure of what it would be.  If at all possible we were going to be able to incorporate the new name into the mural.  Pastor Edwin stated how they had been talking about the name Metropolitan Center.  They wanted metropolitan due to their location and they really wanted to reach out to all the people in the city, both residents and people traveling through.   After discussing it for a while it was decided that the new name would be Metropolitan Community!   This would both represent the metropolitan area but be able to bring them together as the body of Christ and a community.   So with the collaboration of our team and pastor Edwin we came up with an idea, sketched it out on paper, tore down the vampire wall, drew the mural on the wall, bought supplies, and started painting.  We were able with the seven of us to finish the wall in two afternoons which was right in time for church Sunday morning.  We joked that the people coming in for church would think they had come off the elevator on the wrong floor and be really confused.  It was awesome that we were able to incorporate the new church name and the churches memory verse into the wall as well.  Not to shabby for two days work.

Besides painting the wall we were able to prayer walk the city, visit and share at a small group meeting, and take over the worship service on Sunday.  It was a great way to end our time in Malaysia.

(The awful vampire wall we pealed off that we later used as a drop cloth, and the boys painting the wall and gate, easy.)

(tracing the mural, painting the sky, and doing some more painting, all while having fun of course.)

(Doing detail work with my baged mango juice, girls having fun with their mustaches, and working on the bible verse while getting a calf work out.)
