Read it again if you need to. Let it sink in. Because God is giving us a definition for worship.
The first act of Worship was not music. No where was music involved. A guitar wasn’t brought to Church. But a person was. His name was Isaac. Abraham was invited by God, “Take your only son, whom you love, and offer him as a sacrifice.” Abraham was told by God to kill his son for Him as a sacrifice.
Do you know what it says Abraham did? Scripture says that after a 3 day journey Abraham said, “I and the boy will go over there and worship” (Genesis 22) Abraham actually laid his son on the ground, to be given in death.
Abraham said yes to God. That is when Abraham became the 1st worshipper. Not through music, but through offering a sacrifice, of his son’s body.
What is the greatest act of worship ever done? It was God, giving his Son to die for us. It was Jesus, giving his life as a sacrifice for us. These two knew worship. They understood it. God gave his son, sacrificed to the earth for our salvation. And Jesus gave his life to His father and the earth, as a sacrifice for salvation to come all.
“For God so loved the world, that he GAVE his only son,
that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
“We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us.” (1 John 3:16)
Jesus learned this from His Father – true worship. We can too.
Worship is not music. We think it’s songs. We think it’s the guitar being played. We think it’s the several songs before the sermon. Well, it’s not. Scripture doesn’t call this worship. They are wonderful expressions of where our heart is at. I love music towards God more than anyone.
But the singing isn’t the worship.
It is showing up to sing, already haven worshipped.
It is the life sacrificed that is worship.
It is arriving each morning to live our lives presented to God and his ways. That is sacrifice.
It is…loving our enemies, not swearing at them in our minds. Apologizing, forgiving our friends, when they slight us and hurt us deeply. Speaking in love, to everyone. Giving our everything including money, time, and even life – yes, life (he asks us for that too) to Him.
It is a presenting, of your body, actively, as a sacrifice, to God.
Read the scripture one more time…
“…present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God,
which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1)
God is passionate that His people understand what true worship is. Because this is the worship that he finds holy and acceptable. The music isn’t the worship. He is looking to find that our lives worship him.
And as we worship him, by giving him our lives continually, he gives to us, abundantly and beyond our wildest dreams. And then the exchange of worship is happening. The exchange of life being given back and forth.
You are invited to worship the Father, with your life.
We’re excited to keep learning what worship is, so that our songs might even become more powerful and effective.
Will you join us in worshipping the Father?
