Three weeks of investment and relationship building erupted friday night in a party blowout the whole village came to.

As the four teams prepare to leave Romania, we wanted to leave a lasting impression on the people of this village. We decided to have a meeting of cultures, bringing a Mexican fiesta to Romania and spent two days preparing. After making 428 homemade tortillas (Thank you, Cindy), three piñata’s, and spent an afternoon
barbequing meat we got the party started.

It began with the children’s games. The kids all crowded around, straining to see what games we had plan.. The first activity started as they one-by-one dunked their heads in a bucketful of water, chasing illusive bobbing apples. The apples gradually got snatched up and the children sat down triumphantly munching their prize.

Next was the homemade John Fracker shaped piñata. We hesitantly gave the beating stick to the kids as they each took turns whacking at John, eagerly waiting for the candy to spill out. After multiple attacks, John himself finished the job, sending candy, and bits and pieces of his paper mache twin flying.

By this time the band was fully set up and began playing Gypsy music, inviting people off to streets to sit in the pews and enjoy the music. We also served our pork tacos, and after proper instruction from John, everyone took their first bite of authentic Mexican food.

The rest of the evening everyone mingled, danced and laughed as we watched the children play and listen to the upbeat music. I was particularly moved when an elderly woman, out of nowhere, came up to me, and gave me a gianormous hug and expressed her gratitude for the fun experience.
