Lately I have found myself asking this question: what exactly is ministry? Before coming on the World Race I had a completely different definition of this term.
Being in Guatemala, the Lord has taught and shown me that ministry is not at all what I think it is. Up until recently, I have overcomplicated this term and have had it completely backwards.
God has been showing me that ministry is to simply love. That’s it, end of story. Ministry isn’t something that has a formula or structure but rather simply a call to love. A call to serve, honor, and bless others. A call to die to yourself and put others first. A call to meet people for where they are at and to love them for who they are; nothing more, nothing less. Ministry is calling people into greatness and showing them their worth in Christ.
I believe that a hospital is a perfect picture of what ministry looks like. A place that welcomes all people just the way they are. A place that accepts everyone. A place that heals and restores people’s lives. Yet for a long time I thought ministry had to be some grand action. I thought ministry mostly involved things like healing the sick, leading bible studies, praying over people, proclaiming the gospel, building houses, etc.
I am learning that ministry is more in the small things. Such as serving people food, (just like Jesus feeding the 5,000) painting a young girls nails so that she can feel beautiful, sweeping the floor at our ministry hosts home to bless them, playing the guitar on the streets, and even making people smile and laugh can be ministry.
Ministry can literally be anything. As long as I am glorifying Christ, I can minister using endless means because God can use anything to bring Himself glory. And praise God that He chooses us to bring His kingdom to earth; which is something that will never seize to amaze me.
