Lately I have been pondering on what it truly means to fear the Lord. Throughout the book of Proverbs, the words “fear the Lord” are stated time and time again. Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Proverbs 8:13 “To fear the Lord is to hate evil.” Proverbs 9:27 “The fear of the Lord adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.”
So what does it mean to fear God? I believe it means to be in complete awe of Him. I think it is having deep desire to honor God and having the desire to remain entirely obedient to Him. This is a lesson I have learned the hard way, but I am thankful God has taken me to the point in my life where I feel like I have a deeper understanding of what it means to fear the Lord.
I believe John the Baptist really understood this lesson. In John 1: 27, John is talking about Jesus when he says: “He is the one who come after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” It is such a simple statement but so profound. This is the type of mentality we should have as Christians. Every day we should be in complete awe of the Lord and dwell in His greatness and glory. I am so thankful for the truth of these words and I think too often we forget this truth.
I think to truly fear the Lord one has to humble themselves first and foremost. If we are consumed with ourselves, we can’t exactly have complete fear for the Almighty.
My prayer is that one this journey towards leaving for the World Race, that I would truly learn what it means to fear God
