We are in Guatemala!
Last week is blurr of training, meetings, worship and new faces. We stayed in Atlanta for one week to make our last minute preparations before kissing American soil goodbye and boarding the plane to Guatemala. It was the most bizarre feeling of déjà vu remembering back to last year when I was the racer saying goodbye to my parents, stressing about my pack and anticipating what was to come.
We are staying in Quiche, Guatemala working with a ministry called Agape in Action. This month is a bit different than a typical month on the world race as we are experiencing what is called “All Squad Launch”.
All 56 S Squad-ers are together for the first month in order to establish unity and build relationships with everyone on the squad as opposed to just each individual team. Tent city had taken over the grounds of the hospital compound confined to a pink-roped off section in which the locals are informed not to cross to bother the “gringos”.
Our days have been filled with sporadic ministry to hospitals, construction sites, orphanages, and daycare centers as we have flooded the town of Quiche with our broken Spanish and endless quest for delicious coffee, wifi and (my personal favorite) chocolate-covered bananas.
Each evening we have been meeting together for worship as a squad- sharing the depths of our lives. Breaking free from shame and guilt by exposing the messiness that has been hidden for so long. We are a group of misfits; of broken people who have been abused, abandoned, ignored and neglected. People who have found that love by the world’s standards is counterfeit. The Lord has been speaking His TRUE love, healing and forgiveness into us all.
It has been a whirlwind of a week. I have to pinch myself every day as to remind myself where I am. This is my life. Back to tuktuks, markets, mangos, new currencies and trying to decipher a new language. I LOVE THIS.
I am still raising support! I need $800 in order to be fully funded for the first 5 months. I need an additional $2,900 to be able to come back for month 8 and month 11 debrief.
