In
less than a week, I will leave my office at 5:00 for the last time. No
more 20-30 minute commutes between Irmo and Downtown Columbia or
building reports on international electricity consumption. In August I
will return to school to pursue a Masters in Nonprofit Management. And
on top of becoming a student again, I will have the privilege of
planning a life together with my best friend.
It
has been almost two years since I have been overseas for “missions”.
Since the World Race I have been working 8-5 in an air conditioned
office. No mud huts. No dirt roads or “rainy seasons”. In about 2 weeks,
I will be in Guatemala. I will have another opportunity to be the hands
and feet of Christ to the burdened and hopeless. I am blessed to be
able to bring light, life, and love into dark places.
However,
this time will be a little different. I will also be walking alongside
high school students as they do the same. I have the privilege to lead
these students as they see and experience the Lord in ways they could
never imagine and witness a culture completely different from how they
have grown up. We will cry and laugh and pray together. We will build
relationships with people who don’t even speak our language.
I
am so excited to get to experience missions through the eyes of a
teenager. I am privileged to watch the Lord change their lives through
the people they encounter in Guatemala. I am privileged to be able to do
my best to help them as they live among people broken and burdened by
poverty. And I am going to be amazed at the ways their hearts, and mine,
will change.
