Most of yesterday was spent traveling from Maputo, Mozambique to Nelspruit, South Africa. Our bus traveled fine, but the second bus had a flat tire, just before the border crossing. Finally, after 12 hour ride, we arrived at our debrief location, Old Vic Traveller’s Inn.

The hostel is an amazing place and a welcome change after our previous weeks at Iris. We will spend the next six days here, where we will have time to rest, reflect and recharge for our next mission.

The inn is nestled in the beautiful mountains of Nelspruit and features nearby hiking trails, a swimming pool and even a bird sanctuary. There is electricity, hot water and clean, flushable toilets. There are many secluded decks, patios and walkways for much needed alone time.

It stormed shortly after we arrived, and again during the night. This morning is chilly so I’m able to wear jeans and my hoodie. It’s nice to be cold. I’m so thankful to be clean and not sticky and sweaty.
During our stay, we will have debrief with the entire squad and separate team sessions. The rest of the time is ours to use as we choose. Some of us have already scheduled a safari. I’m looking forward to see the African wildlife in their natural habitat.

It’s amazing to think that last night I was sleeping on concrete, covered in sweat and grit, but now I have a hot shower and a nice warm bed. It’s a strange feeling, and I honestly have a hard time reconciling it in my mind. It’s like two separate lives.

I had a similar experience after my trek in Peru (two years ago). After days of hiking and camping out, we had finally had a hot shower. It was the best shower of my life…until today. It’s amazing how much you appreciate small things such as hot water (even running water), after going without for an extended period of time.

“…For I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
