I’m absolutely loving Malaysia! I know I said Thailand was a whole different world, but I feel the same about Malaysia. It’s totally different than last month!
The part of Malaysia we are in is called Penang. It’s actually an island off coast of western Malaysia. It’s a very touristy area with lots of coffee shops and hostels. Definitely a different scene than what we have been used to on the Race so far. This month my team and I are doing a ministry called Unsung Heroes. This is where our main purpose during the month is to find and connect with new ministries that the World Race is not already in contact or partnered with. This way, the World Race has more people that they can come alongside and help with.
This has proven to be a bit more difficult than we initially thought it would be. First, let me explain that being Christian/talking about Jesus to native Malay people is actually illegal. The Malay people are forced, by law, to be Muslim. I think about how much freedom we have in the states to choose those things and how devastating that we take that for granted most days in the States, where here, they are being forced to follow the religion of Islam. Now, don’t get me wrong, a lot of people choose this on their own, but for it to be a law? No words.
This month we have met some backpackers, hung out with friends that we have made at local coffee shops, did some homeless ministry when possible, did a lot of praying, interviewed some potential contacts for the World Race here, and gotten to know each other even better as a team. We have spent a lot of time journaling and getting to reflect on things. This month has definitely been one of rest, which is a huge change from most months on the race.
This country has my heart. I love the people. I love the food. I love what God has been teaching me this month. I love how close my team has gotten.
Next month is the Philippines. After that we are off to Africa! Can you believe it!? I am trying to soak up every minute of this journey and not wish it away on account of being uncomfortable or just wanting to be back in the states.
God has given me a new energy and passion this month. I am so grateful (not that I wasn’t before) to be here. This is a privilege to be able to serve in 11 different countries, to get to learn and grow, meet new people, experience new cultures, and grow as a person. I am so ready for the next 4 months!
Just a quick fundraising update: I still have about $400 left to raise, so if you would be willing to donate, that would be a huge blessing! And of course, thank you to everyone who already has donated and to all of you who support me in praying for me! I couldn’t be here without the help of all of you!
