Hey Everyone! Let me start by saying how much I miss you all and love all the emails I’ve been getting! This is officially the second time I’ve gotten wifi since I’ve been here and the first I only had for about 15 minutes. I am going to be working on contacting you all soon, but for now I wanted to post some highlights from the trip so far. I wrote this a few days ago, so here ya go π
Well guys, I made it to the Dominican Republic safely and have been here for about 9 days now. I am currently laying in my hammock (that my wonderful friend Charis bought for me) and trying to fall asleep. Instead though, I am being kept awake by really really LOUD Latino music playing up the street! So, I thought I would share a few highlights from the trip so far…
1. We have showers! They are outdoor and freezing cold, but they work! There’s also a small waterfall out back leading into a “river” that we can also bathe in… But I haven’t done that one yet π
2. I clogged the toilet and had to get a branch to unclog it. (Embarrassing!!)
3. No lice yet!! π
4. The Dominican Republic might be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.
5. The poverty is saddening and it is everywhere.
6. Laughter transcends language barriers.
7. Basketball also transcends language barriers.
8. Headbands are a girl’s best friend.
9. God is already up to some amazing things here and I can’t wait to see what else He has planned.
10. Got up in front of a Dominican church on Sunday morning and shared my testimony…was scared to death, but it was worth it!
11. My squad leaders, squad mates, and teammates are the best people. I am so blessed to get to do life with them for this next year!
12. Went scuba diving on the beach on Saturday for $5. Sooooo beautiful!
13. The food is interesting. Mostly rice, beans, and plantains. It’s actually really good. Definitely the best coffee I’ve ever had! The oatmeal/rice pudding is pretty rough. Could definitely use some chic fila right now π over all, the food is awesome though!
14. My first night here I slept on a bus. My second was on a cot in the girl’s dorm. Every night since has been in my hammock. Best sleep ever!!!
15. Haven’t thrown up yet!! Or pooped my pants!!
16. Last week we got to write the curriculum for a girls discipleship class in a town about an hour away. Got to meet the kids at the school it will be taught at. Loved their sweet faces π
