OK, here are some of the things I've eaten in the Philippines . . .
Rambutan – a spiky red fruit. You peal the outsideoff and eat the yummy godness on the inside. IT's kind of a translucent fruit wrapped around a giant seed.
Boku Pan-dan – This one is interesting. If I understnad it correctly they take unflavored jello and boil it with pan-dan (a kind of grass). Then they put green food coloring in it, cool it, and cut it into cubes. THe jellow is added to a mixture of coconut milk and condensed milk, along with corn kernels, cheese, and young cocnut. Most Filipinos love it. I did not
Something yummy . . .
Chicken ADobo with rice, fresh Pineapple and cucumbers
Guava – this is a non-sweet type of guava. The also call it Wood-Apple. That's exactly what it tastes like. The little seeds are very hard like pebbles andmake it very uncomfortable to eat.
SOmething yummy – boiled chicken, potatoes, and other veggies. Can't remember what it's called.
Atis – OK, this one is tough to explain. It's a fruit. It's sweet. and it's mushy.
You can very easily just pull it apart and the sections just sort of fall out of it . . . each section is a sweet, differenent from anything else I've ever had, mushy, white fruit wrapped around a small, shiny, black seed.
The 100 Year Egg/Salted Egg – A duck lays an egg. The egg is gathered and buried for at least 18 days in salty mud. The egg is then re-gathered, boiled, dyed purple for fun and eaten. It is often eaten with shopped tomato. The tomato definitely makes it more palatable but it is not good. The consistency is very strange, almost like wet chalk – if that were even possible. IDK. Not Good.
Fried bananas – I forget the Filipino name for then but my name for them is pure goodnes! My new favorite for sure! They slice the bananas, wrap them in a very thin flour wrap, almost like a tortilla, and fry them with brown sugar. Yum!!
Fish omelet – Yup, lots of little tiny fish mixed up with s ome egg and flour, and fried crispy. Gross. Look, you can see his little eyeballs.
Green Beans with ground Pork, rice, something with meats and veggies, and fried bananas.
Balut Egg – OK, a duck lays an egg. It gets fertilized. the baby duck begins to grow. After 18 (orso) days it is harvested, boiled, and served with salt and vineagar. YOu crack the top of the shell and drink the "juice". then you peel the shell and eat the rest of the roasted baby. Gross!
Hopia – these are like little pancake type biscuits filled with a pasty fruit filling. We had mango and Ube which is a purple root "fruit" (I think) We called them Filipino pop tarts
SOmething with chicken, veggies, and quial eggs . . .
Lanzones – A small fruit that grows in clusters, like grapes. You peel the section and the fruit splits into sections like an orange. The fruit has translucent flesh and is wrapped around a really disgusting tasting seed. ASlong as you don't bite into the seed it's really yummy. It tastes a little bit citrusy mixed with honey.
