Growing up in an Italian home has greatly influenced my love for food.  At family meals our palettes will experience a smorgasbord of tasty dishes.  While eating, we often talk about meals we have eaten in the past that we enjoyed, or meals we will prepare in the future.  Obsessive?  Perhaps.

Needless to say, coming on the Race was stretching in just the “food” category alone.  I like to call myself a “mostly vegan.”  As I transition to a new country each month, I wonder what foods await me in that country.  Will I be able to maintain my “vegan” status?  Will I have access to fresh fruits and vegetables?  Will we have opportunity to cook or assist in preparing food?

This month we have had the privilege of cooking two meals a week for our team.  I give genuine thanks for the meals we could prepare, and the blessings prepared by others.

Our oatmeal breakfast was something to look forward to every morning!

                                       Vegetable stir fry, yes please!

One morning I was enjoying oatmeal with raisins, almonds, peanut butter, banana, apple, and soymilk, during our team devotions.  We are reading Praise Habit by David Crowder.  Psalm 119:97 stuck out to me:

I ponder every morsel of wisdom from you,
I attentively watch how you’ve done it.
I relish everything you’ve told me of life.
I won’t forget a word of it…
My soul is starved and hungry, ravenous!
Insatiable for your nourishing commands…Your words are so choice, so tasty; I prefer them to the best home cooking.

This is my prayer, that my soul would be starved and ravenous for the Word of God and His presence!  As I searched through Scripture, I found a lot of verses that spoke about food. The more I read these, the more I realize I desire to be more excited about the Lord and spiritual food than I am about my most recent home cooked meal!

Matthew 4:4
Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: “It takes more than bread to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God’s mouth.

Psalm 34:8
Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see— how good GOD is. Blessed are you who run to him.

Matthew 5:6
You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
