The heat radiating from the sun feels like it could literally vaporize anyone with a shift of its rays.
The donkeys think they are the law of the land…constant braying over territory has become something to expect. They chase, kick, and bray as if their lives depend on it – regardless of time. Anything to keep their territory.
This is the Kalahari Desert – sand is our landscape. We sleep on sand, we walk on sand, we cook over sand, we basically do everything with sand as our main audience. It has made itself comfortable inside our tents, clothing, food, and pretty much everywhere else too. It’s weird having sand everywhere but no ocean to accompany it. Haha
The Botswani people are friendly and love to see 7 American girls living in their homeland with tents pitched in a circle. It’s like our own little tent city with a tree in the middle to act as our shade and heat shield.
The people come and visit when they please and love to just sit and chat for hours…this culture isn’t a fast-paced one – they enjoy their time with each other and don’t make too many plans in the day so they can be with each other. Quality time is important to them. They do work, don’t get me wrong, but relationships are a huge thing for them. They love it, I love it, we all love it!
The church we attend is in our backyard. It’s a huge green army tent set to seat around 50 people. Granted, we maybe have 10 chairs to offer them, but most of them bring their own seats. You can see them from far off carrying their plastic chair upside down above their heads as they make their way to church. It kind of reminds me of how most African woman and children carry water jugs on their heads…only this time it was a chair and it seemed normal.
Carrying things on your head would have been an odd thing to see at the beginning of my race or even in America, but so many things that once were weird have now become very normal and expected…I’m probably the weird one now, haha. #worldraceprobs
Anyways, the night sky always throws out a HUGE spread of twinkling stars for us to gaze at…the Milky Way is definitely the top-seller but I would say the blood moons come in second…both the sunsets and sunrises are gorgeous and always something to look forward to as we wake up and as we lay our heads down to sleep every night. It’s a beautiful thing.
This is Botswana – Living life like the locals and loving every minute of it!
