There I was, in the pew… Particularly distracted that morning. Hearing the message but none of it was penetrating through my busy mind, filled with thoughts and anticipation for the future.. ‘Where will I be worshipping this time next year?’ ‘Will there be a formal “service” to attend?’ ‘Why does this service have to be so formal anyway?’ The service began coming to a close. All of the ordinances had been carried out, the prayers said, message delivered. Before we were blessed in our dismissal the congregation stood for the final song. It was a simple hymn that I was unfamiliar with.
“God has chosen me, God has chosen me”, it began, “to bring good news to the poor; to bring new sight to those searching for light; to set alight a new fire; to bring to birth a new kingdom to earth.” I just listened, taking in the beauty of words. “God is calling me, God is calling me”, the words rang out, “in all whose cry is unheard; to raise up the voice with no power or choice.” I joined in the worship, proudly singing out the words that resonated so deeply within me. The song concluded, “And to tell the world that God’s Kingdom is near, to remove oppression and break down fear, yes God’s time is near, God’s time is near.”
I felt joy and love flood my heart as the tears welled in my eyes.. This is my song. But not just mine! This is the song of all God’s children! A battle cry of the Children of Light for Love, Justice, Peace & Hope.
This is Our Song.
To be reminded of our Great Purpose is so life giving.. & through the cloud of thoughts and questions running through my mind, that is what that simple hymn did for me.
“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children, and walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. For you were once in darkness but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5)
