The Perception Filter over my Sin.

If you watch Dr. Who, think back in season 6 to the ‘Silence’. The white-ish aliens with long fingers who had this amazing perception-filter mechanism.

If you don’t have a clue what I’m talking about, let me tell you a quick generalized-story.

Scene- Earth, present day.

The Doctor is visiting Earth with his companions. Everything is as normal as mystery-solving sci-fi allows. The Dr. and his comrades keep seeing an alien, but can’t ever remember the experience. The aliens used what The Doctor calls a ‘Perception-Filter’, meaning even though the aliens are right there, your gaze is directed away from them. The aliens came with an in-born memory-filter as well, so when you saw one, you wouldn’t remember that you saw them.

The planet was *definitely* being run by these aliens…who wore sharp black tuxedos, might I add. Stay classy, scary dudes.

The earth-natives ended up having to ‘kill on the spot’ because they wouldn’t remember to even look for the alien without it being seen.

This is how my life is with sin.

One minute, I recognize my weaknesses,
and the next, I am fralala-ing about my day,
being controlled by an unbeknownst thought pattern.

Is it really so hard to believe that the humans couldn’t see what was controlling them unless they were looking at it? (Honestly, nothing is hard to believe with sci-fi. That’s why I LOOOOVE it.) BUT back to my point…

I’m in the process of killing my sin when I see it.
-My past mistakes… I’m letting them be.
-My future mistakes… I’m not worrying about.
-My next step, and only my next…….. I can do something about that.

You really do have the opportunity of a lifetime today- to look into yourself, find the dark corners and ask God to shed some light down there. Yes, it is scary, gross, and uncomfortable. But you know what?

God loves me, and wants His best for me. And yes, God loves me dark corners and all, but because He loves so perfectly, He has been cleaning house. He calls it sanctification. He has invited me to carry my cross and lose my life (which included pulling out skeletons). All this applies to you, too!

Don’t let your ‘perception filter’ cause apathy towards your sin… Jesus died for it. God is gentle and loving with your heart- He is trustworthy!

And, if you needed a refresher- perception is not reality. Reality is reality.

So… feel free to join me in battle.

Here is how I have been waging war on my sin:

I’ve been taking active steps in asking good questions, talking out my misconceptions, sinful nature and specific thought habits- *living in community*- and the next step is learning how to live in the Spirit.

Stay tuned for another Whovian experience in Pt. 3!
