Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa. This small coastal town is a place of huge contrasts. The beachfront is lined with fancy restaurants, surf shops, board rental places and bikini-clad tourists. Just two blocks inland, however, lies a large slum community – locally referred to as a township. The poorest live in makeshift homes of roof sheeting. There is also a large homeless population sleeping in bushes and begging a living on the beachfront.
Victory For All Bread House of Jeffrey’s Bay aspires to serve these people by meeting one of their most basic needs – food. It is run by this man, Lucas. Several days a week he can be found in the bakery mixing and kneading dough, or in the adjoining soup kitchen over a huge pot with a three foot spoon in his hand. Lucas can cook enough soup and bread in one day to feed two hundred people. Three days a week, Lucas’ soup and bread will go to a community center where the homeless and hungry can come and receive a hot meal.
Lucas also makes food deliveries to specific families that are sick or struggling to make ends meet.
Today, my team tagged along with Lucas to give him a hand preparing food and delivering it to eight day-care centers within the township. Lucas visits these “creches” often, bringing them each loaves of bread and a pot of soup to feed the children. He will then take a few moments to speak a word of encouragement to the people and pray over the kids.
The building where Lucas and his helpers make the bread and soup is an abandoned government building and is theirs to use rent-free and utility-free in exchange for upkeep. They need only provide the ingredients!
Some of the bread house’s future goals are to get a community garden going, where produce will be grown to serve the peoples needs and help defray the cost of the soup. Lucas is also planning to raise fish on the property, providing both food for the township and fertilizer for the garden!
Please pray for the community of Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa, and Victory For All Bread House’s ministry.
In order to continue serving and supporting ministries like these, Pablo and Brooke need to raise the last $5,700 of their support. Please consider giving a tax-deductible donation by clicking on the “support us” link. Thank you!
