Several weeks ago I was at project searchlight in Georgia. The point of this program is to help new World Race alumni establish their next steps in life. Unfortunately, I did not figure out my entire life’s plans during that week. What I did get though, was a week of great reunions, insights and encouragement.

During one of our coaching sessions we had to answer a series of questions. One question in particular stood out to me as definitely worthy of some pondering.

What statement would you with to be on your gravestone?

Worth pondering? I thought so. Knowing that your life is on earth is going to end some day, how do you want to be remembered?

I would like to say that it was a profound statement. It was not. It was simply:

Andrew Tobias

The jackass that carried Jesus into town

Maybe not the greatest thing to have on a gravestone, but it hopefully gets the point across. When I leave this earth I want to be known as someone who followed Jesus everywhere He went and brought His love to everyone he met. Most importantly, I want God to get all of the glory in everything that may be accomplished through me.

The power to save doesn’t lie in me, and there is no level of intellect, skill or charisma that will ever change that. No matter what I bring to the table, I am helpless without the power of the Holy Spirit. But Jesus has promised to send His Spirit with us wherever we go. So although I have nothing, in Christ I have all things. Wherever I go, Christ is there with me.

I know that in this life I will never have it all together, but I take comfort in knowing that no matter what, in the end I can be the jackass that carried Jesus into town.
