Dear future worldracer,

Here are some creative suggestions to help you prepare for this journey!
The best advice: get prayed up, get in the word DAILY (no matter what… don’t compromise on this pre-race, get prayer warriors and dig into the Lord)

Things you need to pack:

A shower curtain.
I have found so many uses for this inexpensive simple piece of plastic!
-A rainfly for your tent when you accidentally scrap it against a concrete wall.
-A footprint when yours just isn’t enough to battle the elements
-Great to sit on when you are doing feedback
-Work out and do stretches on !
-Wrap your backpack up when its raining!
-Always handy when you need a cape.
Binder clips
They are extremely useful, tiny little gadgets!
-Great to squeeze (and hold) your toothpaste at the end of the tube.
-Holds all your loose papers together
-That one time your drawstring came out and your clothes could have fallen off if not for that handy dandy binder clip!
-Keeps your snacks fresh and closed from ants!
-Because you’ll be cool because you thought to bring them.

Sunscreen
Not that I ever use it… but, it is ridiculously expensive outside the USA. Might as well bring a small tube then spend $15 on a tiny little one. (same thing with aloe vera! Bring 3 oz of the stuff and you will appreciate it when you refuse to use that sunscreen that you so conveniently brought.)

-Other things that you might not think about that is helpful:
-Write your name on every single thing you own and bring. Just do it.
-Extra pair of headphones (and maybe even a headphone spliter)
-Bring earplugs and an eye mask…even if you don’t use them at home, bring it.
-Extra bags (not walmart bags) those reusable, recyclable bags. (Most stores charge you per bag at the grocery store.)
-SPACE BAGS for your clothes… please. Do it. It is totally worth it. (I am about to shell out some cash at the airport for some. I feel they are necessary.)
-If you wait to the night before to pack, I will come to your house and beat you up! DO NOT DO IT.
-Heavy duty work gloves. Don’t forget these.
-Extra pair of inexpensive sunglasses.
-Appetite for rice and beans
-Maybe a kindle or nook
-Small bottle of baby powder
-Envelopes. Who knew the post office would not share? *be intentional about sending your supporters letters from the field)
-A norwax rag! Useful for everything. (email my teammate Alys for all the reasons why!)
-Bring clothes you would wear at home…not mission trip clothes. (But, don’t go crazy. Four shirts, 3 pants, ect.) Keep your bag under 40 lbs. *Which is another reason NOT to pack the night before… so you can weigh your 76 pound pack and get rid of things in your living room instead of at the airport check it… seriously. Do it. (If you are not convinced yet, take your pack on a mile long hike then eliminate stuff that way. Trust me, it happens.)
-Travel size bottles. (I had a bunch of one time use samples…so, I did not bring any 3 oz bottles. So, don’t do that…just bring bottles instead.)
-Gerber knife
-Wireless speakers
-collapsible bowl/cup and a cheap spork. (Walmart-four pack=two bucks.)
-Clothes line (also useful when they throw your pack on top of a bus… its extra line available to tie down your stuff!)
-Large capacity external hard drive (with movies, sermons, pod casts downloaded BEFORE you leave the states.) Try to get it formatted for both Pcs and Macs!
-A tiny (TINY) bag of office supplies: a few paper clips, a few safety pins, tape, scissors, super glue, binder clips, ect. Should fit inside a sandwich bag… don’t do crazy trying to bring the principal office desk. Just a few things are needed. Also, if you safety pin your socks together (and leave the pin somewhere in your sock) it really helps with washing and keeping track of your sock mates.
-Don’t bring anything fruit scented … because once on the race, your orchard blossom deodorant will smell like the orchard blossom that rotted! Don’t do it. Stick with powder/shower fresh scents.
