About a Call

When I look at Abraham’s life and his call I admire his faith and obedience. The Lord had an immediate call on his life and it was to “go”. So Abraham just went. He didn’t even really ask where, he just packed up everything and his family and left.

The entire time he kept moving forward and everywhere he went he would worship God. God had a greater call on his life which was to make him into a great nation that would bless so many. At times Abraham doubted the promise God made but he held on tight to it and chose to trust God against all odds.

The other guy, Moses, had a call too. His calling was kind of already a desire he had. He wanted to free the people but was a coward, didn’t know what to do so he ran away. When God literally called him and assigned him this job, he struggled with insecurities and felt inadequate, don’t we all?

But the cool thing is God was clearly already involved in this specific calling even before Moses knew. God is part of the whole journey. Moses was always provided for, always protected. Moses walked out his calling from a place of intimacy with the Lord. Without that I don’t think he could have been able to do anything.

Then there’s Daniel, his calling was just wired within him. He was born a prophet. He spoke without fear, without holding back. As he lived this way, obedient, always giving his ‘yes’ to God, great things happened. Doors opened and he was constantly being promoted. He was trusted by the king and by God. He was faithful with the little that he did have so God gave him more. He was a man of integrity, staying true to what he believed and to who he was. That ended up saving his life.

What I see from these guys is that calling can take a different shape in each of our lives. I think some of us have this ingrained desire or thing that we just know. But for some of us it looks a little different. It takes stepping out and trusting His voice. There is a general call as believers we all have, which I’ll sum up for you, to love. But there are also the more specific calls, and personal ones that God gives each of us.

Getting on the right path or even knowing what our calling is can be overwhelming for some of us, it was for me when we first started talking about this in class. But I think I’ve got it ironed out just enough I don’t have to be so overwhelmed.
As long as I’m in a place of intimacy with God, listening to Him and obeying Him I don’t think I can really go wrong or “miss out” on His call for my life.

So whatever part of the journey you’re on, discovering your call, taking the path towards your call, or living your call, don’t fret. Trust the One who created you. Trust that He’s got you and he’s part of the whole journey and keep moving forward. I think purpose is in the journey, not necessarily the call. So enjoy it!
