The Hole is where I spent most of my time last month in Swaziland. With a goal of digging a 4 meter by 4 meter by 3 meter hole, we started working. We only had picks, short-handled shovels, rope, and buckets to use. The Hole is actually a septic tank for El Shaddai’s children’s dorms.
Here are some pictures to walk you through the last month at The Hole:
Breaking Ground
Getting up the tough layer of roots
Gotta love it when everyone
is supervising
Finally getting to the soft dirt
Starting to make some progress
As it got deeper we had to start
throwing the dirt higher and further
Breaking up the dirt so we can
shovel it out easier
We left some dirt as steps in the
corner to help us get in and out
Pulling up a bucket of dirt since it
is too deep to throw out the dirt
Finally reached our goal of
3 meters down (about 10 feet)
Our two Swazi helpers,
John (on the right) and his friend
With the steps removed, we
have finished digging
Now we have started building the actual
septic tank out of cider blocks
By the time we left El Shaddai, the tank was almost complete. They only need to add another 3 or 4 more rows of blocks to finish it. God provided us with so much endurance and strength! It was such a blessing getting to help dig The Hole and build the tank! I am really going to miss Africa!!
