I have about thirty minutes at this internet cafe in Granada so I’ll do my best to recount a story to you in that time.
It takes place at Laguna de Apoya, where, incidentally, team ignite spent our last few days together. The lagoon is about 30 minutes away from Granada. I had set up a fun day for the team this particular Sunday afternoon at the lagoon and got a pretty great deal for a driver, who was a guy we found on the side of the street. He pointed to a fairly large flatbed truck and said he could pick us up in that. I said that’d be fine and we’d see him at 11am the next morning.
He showed up about 5 minutes late and by the time we got everyone rounded up, we were out at 11:30 and swimming in the lagoon by 12:15. The water was cool, clean and refreshing. Joe, JD and I swam out a pretty good length and then back to play some card. A frizby was thrown, rays were soaked, and books were read. It was a relaxing afternoon with nothing to bother us.
Until our driver came back about 15 minutes late, which of itself would have been nothing to us. But he was drunk. “Solo dos cervezas,” ( which means “Only two beers”) he said, stumbling and throwing his arm around my neck. “Is OK,” he assured us.
“No!” I said. “We’ll wait for you to sober up.” He didn’t like that at all, started the car and motioned for us to get in. After several
minutes of arguing, I finally said, “OK, I’ll drive!” Everyone seemed to like that pretty well so I made my way into the drivers seat. The driver scooted close to me and shouted spanish in my ear for the next thirty minutes as we rumbled up and down the mountain. I’m not sure what was said, but he laughed and had a great time, as did everyone else in the van. One of the participants, Amy, says that he even grabbed my hand frequently. I recall many motions to shift in different directions and instructions to not hit people in the street. He was very helpful.
We made it home safe, paid the driver less than the agreed amount and everyone had a great time!
I’m thoroughly enjoying my time here and look forward to the adventures of each day.
