This month we had two new team members, Kathleen and Vanessa.  They are only with us for one month, on what is called a ‘World Race Exposure trip’.  They join the World Race for a month to see what it is like and if it is something they will do in the future.  They get to hear all the different stories that we have experienced over seven months of “short-term” missions, so in honor of them here is a blog on short-term missions.

Be prepared to share your testimony!  What other reason do you have for going on a mission trip than to tell others about Christ and what he has done in your life?  It doesn’t have to be long, just open, honest, and real.

I’ve been able to share my testimony many times, each time it brings more healing; more confidence; and more encouragement.

Be prepared to give a sermon.  This may or may not happen, but it is a huge privelege to preach to a church and tell them more about your Savior.  If you are prepared you may get the honor instead of somebody else, which is experience you don’t want to miss out on.

I’ve seen people jumping at the opportunity and those who won’t even do it based on doctrine principles.  Be willing to move past your comfort zone and see what God does with it.

Don’t complain about where you are living!  I know, whatever you are laying your head on at night doesn’t have a pillow-topper like your mattress at home, but I promise you if they had a better place or more space you would be sleeping there.

You are the guest and are treated well.  Many places I’ve stayed they have opened there home and us, complete stranges.  In Rwanda, we had bedrooms because some of the family members moved into the building behind the house for the month.

Of course the food is different, but it can be delicious!  You aren’t in America anymore.

Did you expect the rest of the world to be the same as America?  How boring would that be?  God created people different and cultures have lots of various foods, branch out and try it all.  Hamburgers and french fries will be waiting for you when you get home.  Plus, you can still buy a Coke anywhere, Coca-Cola has reached more parts of the world than the gospel.

In Malaysia, I tried bird’s nest, fish balls, and mystery meat on a stick.  You don’t won’t always like it, but be open.

Be present!  In other words, leave your troubles at home.

Disconnect and unplug from home for the time being (this doesn’t have to be 100%, but maybe it should, pray about it).  Some people have fasted from the internet or their i device.  You are will a group that you will probably never be with again, dive into community.

Pack and then take half of it out.  Trust me you have over packed.

You won’t need that much stuff and if you do need something you don’t have, it gives God a chance to show up and provide for your needs.  Every month people on our squad leave more things behind.  Every month there is something else I realize I don’t need.  Mainly, pack less clothes and less toiletries.  Plus, you will take advantage of all the extra space by buying souveniers!

…and know that we go out to bless other people but more than likely you will be blessed beyond belief.  If you haven't gone on any mission trips you should sign up for one!  It will change your life!
