Long
before my eyes drank in the sight of millions of liters of rushing, tumbling
water and longer still before my skin soaked in the cool, refreshing spray of
its collision with the earth my ears could hear the sounds of many waters like
a distant thunder.
Suddenly,
rounding a corner, I was standing across from one of the most amazing
waterfalls in the world – Victoria Falls. It was powerful. It was majestic. “LORD I’m amazed by You” was all I could
manage.
During
the rainy season over five million liters flow over these falls every second,
creating a spray that can be seen from miles away and that will completely
drench its visitors. Even now, though, at the end of the dry season it is
beautiful, commanding, and simply stunning.
Victoria
Falls was discovered by the legendary explorer and missionary Dr. David
Livingstone, but for centuries the locals have called it Mosi-oa-Tunya or “The
Midst that Thunders,” a name that immediately reminded me of Psalm 29.
It
seems paradoxical to say the voice of the LORD is over the waters, powerful and
thundering and then to think He also speaks with a small, small voice (1 Kings
19:12). But I love paradoxes and standing before this waterfall, deemed one of
the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, His voice was both at once.
As
He spoke to my heart it was still and small yet it clearly cut through the roar
of waters and distractions in a powerful, majestic way that thundered and shook
my spirit. It was a simple message of love, one I knew already, but hearing the
words echo in my heart just left me even more in awe as He captivated me once
more.
God of glory thunders; The LORD
is over many waters. The voice of the LORD
is powerful; The voice of the LORD
is full of majesty.” (Psalm 29:3-4)
My
prayer for you today is that you hear the powerful, thundering yet still, small
voice of the LORD
today and that He captivates your heart again with His love.
