Last month  we enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing debrief on Koh Samet island in Thailand. I stepped out of my sandals getting off the boat and didn’t step back into them until I boarded a boat again to head back to Bangkok. It was glorious!

The room I shared with my good friend, Anna Coffey, was a little ghetto to say the least. Bright pink walls greeted us. A very dim bulb was our light. The toilet didn’t flush, even bucket style. And the shower didn’t work. But really who cares, we are on a beach and had no plans of being in the room anyway… except to sleep.

And that my friend is where this poem picks up.

Three o’clock in the morning and all are at rest

The gentle fan’s blowing reminds me I’m blessed.
With Anna in pajamas and me a little less
Peacefully dreaming despite bugs and pests

When all of a sudden what should we hear
But a THWAP and a SNAP, I awoke with some fear

Colliding together, with a jolt we two meet
Now we know we are certainly in for a treat

We’d spring from the bed except we can’t you see
Our bed is in pieces in the form of a “V”

We held on to edges, tossed and we turned
Finally daybreak, wishing this bed I could burn

The management gasped and apologized much
Badly they felt about our early morning crunch

And that is the story of how our bed broke in two
No cuddling or jumping, just sleeping – it’s true!
But there’s no need to worry, to fret or to sue

The next night we slumbered in twin beds – one pink and one blue.

The next morning Rachel was leading a workout session for anyone who wanted to join. I decided that if my bed broke with just me sleeping in it that maybe it was time to lay off the noodles and do a little exercise.
