Part 1: On the Surface
Do you see the girl in the corner? Really see her? She
probably has you fooled. She is a master at that.
She is well liked by most, though not popular. She is smart,
maybe even considered a bit of a nerd because of the advanced classes, but no
pocket protectors or geek language. She wears baggy clothes and a lot of black,
but she isn’t scary gothic – just a little gothic. She is quiet and a bit
artsy. She blends in a crowd seemingly seamlessly but yet if you take a second glance you
notice she doesn’t quite fit.
Her story isn’t that unusual. She is from a broken home,
fragmented by a father who didn’t hang around for reasons never made clear.
Raised by a single mother and her family, few, I dare say, have been loved as
much as she was growing up. And eventually the mother re-married. Her entire
life she has been immersed in church, the Bible, God.
But that’s what everyone sees. That is the story that
everyone knows…
She wears a smile that is convincing unless you look into
her eyes. It is then that you can see the fear, the questions, the missing
pieces. She makes sure it is all perfected for everyone else. She is strong.
She is independent. She is everything you want her to be.
She can weave any story you want to hear…
She had a huge breakfast and didn’t really need lunch. She
had a huge lunch and has lots of homework so she isn’t really hungry for
supper. She ate before she came. Why wouldn’t you believe her?
She loves to play with the cats and sometimes gets too into
it, that’s where all the markings come from. She fell while out walking and
landed on some broken glass – really it’s ok. It’s chilly in the air
conditioned room so it is just easier to leave on long sleeves. Are you sure?
What is her story really? Well I’ll let her tell you…
