In case you ever want to visit Thailand (which you should), here are some things you should keep in mind:
1. Crickets and spiders are a common food in Thailand. We actually witnessed some locals catching GIANT tarantulas for their dinner. Definitely not my cuisine of choice, but the crickets weren’t half bad….
2. Shoes. Thais don’t wear them inside. Be prepared to shed them at the door at homes and some stores and restaurants. And, yes, the floors are cleaner here too!
3. The definition of rudeness is different in Thai culture, so just laugh it off when more than one person asks you if you are pregnant. (Yes, I’m speaking on that one from experience.)
4. Same, same, but different. This is one English phrase that almost every Thai knows. Basically, it means the same thing as the word “similar,” but it is far more fun to say.
5. Sweetened condensed milk is used widely throughout Thailand. I have learned so many new uses for this including pouring it over desserts and smoothies. Thailand has opened a whole new world to me concerning canned dairy.
6. I never wanted to eat rice and noodles again after I left China. Little did I know that the Chinese just don’t know how to cook them, but the Thais – they know. I could eat my weight in Thai fried rice. So all of you who were thinking of going out to Chinese tonight, do yourself a favor and go eat Thai food instead.
7. Many residents of Thailand are from hill tribes. One item these indigenous peoples are known for making is clothing. The colors and patterns are so vibrant and beautiful, and my whole squad has picked up one or two new items for their wardrobes.
8. Thais are patriotic, so patriotic that the national anthem plays twice a day. At 6:00 pm and 8:00 am, everyone stops what they are doing and stands to show respect. It’s confusing for foreigners at first, but you’ll get used to it.
9. Song taos are the main form of public transportation. They are basically pickup trucks with a covering and seats added in the bed. These modified trucks probably wouldn’t fly in the States, but they sure are fun.
10. The fork and spoon have different functions in Thailand than they do in the United States. You eat with your spoon and shovel food on to it with your fork. Basically, the fork is similar to a knife here, and it is bad manners to eat with it.
11. Most Thais believe the soul resides in the head. They also believe feet are unclean since they are the lowest part of the body. You should never touch someone’s head. It would be disrespectful to them. Also, never touch someone with your feet because it is also considered an act of disrespect.
