Want to know my favorite worship song of all time?
It’s the classic “In Christ Alone” hymn. Every time I hear it, I can’t help but join in and sing. It fires me up! My (somewhat conservative) home church sings it during a service every once in a while, and I have to fight back the urge to raise my hands and shout the line “THEN BURSTING FORTH, IN GLORIOUS DAY, UP FROM THE GRAVE HE ROSE AGAIN!” (See, I can’t even type it without using all caps!)
The song has especially been on my heart during the last few days as we celebrated Easter with our ministry in Malaysia. No, we didn’t get to sing it in church, but I sang it in my head amidst the beautiful, yet unintelligible Indian worship song being sung around me. I love how it tells the story of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection, and the power it has on the lives of those who believe.
My heart’s cry is to live out the words to this song….to not just sing the lyrics, but have them represent my thankful and confident heart towards Christ and what He did for me on The Cross.
For your convenience, I posted the lyrics below and you can check out one of my favorite versions of “In Christ Alone” by clicking here.
God, thank you for your son Jesus and the sacrifice He made on the Cross over 2,000 years ago. May I never take it for granted. Sometimes I can hardly believe you love little-ol'-me that much. Thank you for taking on my burden of sin so that I could walk in the confidence of your power and grace in my life. I praise you. I am yours and you are mine. Continue to command my every step and I will try my best to follow willingly.
In Christ Alone
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand
In Christ alone who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ
No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand
