Note: since Laos is a closed country (can’t preach about Jesus or tell others unless they ask) I had to not include some details and I had to change the names. Also this was not a UH month, In addition i wanted to wait till I was out of the country
When we first arrived in Laos we spent the day at Jim’s and just got a chance to relax and enjoy the day since we had traveled there from Africa and we all were tired. The next day we woke up and planned to leave around noon but left in the evening instead.
Once we got there we got a chance to put our things away and have a dinner with the family. The next day we woke up and found out that we needed to put a barbed wire fence in. I thought that would not be to hard, the guys needed to help with a building but there was not much to do with that so in the afternoon we helped out with what the ladies were doing. We had to chop through hard jungle with vines and tress growing everywhere. There were thorns everywhere we went. It took us all 10 days to clear everything so we could put the barbed wire in. As we were putting the barbed wire in we had to find sticks on the ground to put in the fence. It was harder than I thought to find the 100s of sticks that were needed to do the job. The other workers who were there (paid works by James who was the contact that Jim sent us to for 10 days) hopped the fence and started chopping down tress and branches to use.
We also got to clean the backyard of all the rocks the had to cut the grass with a weed whacker. We then needed to burn the grass in a barrel. I had a great fire going then one of the workers took a pile of green grass that we just cut and put it right on the fire and put it out. It was time for dinner shortly after that so we left it smoking in the back yard. The next day it was just ash that was left in the barrel. So me Jimmy (James son) and ralph worked on burning the grass. Jimmy brought gas and poked holes in the bottom of the barrel and helped to keep the fire burning but getting sticks and adding gas as needed.
Why is this guy an Unsung Hero?
He is reaching out to the community across the river that does not know who Jesus is and some might not have ever heard of his name. He wants to help those who are trapped in human trafficking, but as of right now does not have the resources needed to do so. He wants to rent some land next to where his home is so he can make a soccer field and reach out to the teens and young people in his community.
The resort is his source of income (in addition to other donations that come in each moth). We helped him clean it up since the last owner let it fall apart.
As I was working for him I got to see his heart for the community and the people here. Since Laos is a closed country, I needed to be sure that he can safely host racers. Chances are if a team goes there and he has booking for the rooms he will just have the racers camp in his back yard for their time there.
