There are many unknowns in life. We all know that. There will never be a time on this earth where we know everything there is to know about God. That is part of the big adventure of being a disciple of Christ: knowing that there is always MORE! More to learn and understand and more to grow in, through Him. After twenty years of being a Christian, I am still learning new things through His Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Maybe you have recently been reminded of something you thought you had already learned in your Christian life. Maybe you have revisited some basic foundational truths about God the Father and His love for us, His children. These truths often might sound familiar or something we “should have known”, but as long as we are living on this earth our Heavenly Father will take us deeper into His heart. I don’t think He minds teaching our feeble minds the same lessons in a deeper way over and over again until we get it. He knows us and He knows what we need. He WANTS us to know Him and be known BY Him! I believe we will be learning truths about God for the rest of our lives. So, keep going!! Don’t be discouraged!! THIS is the abundant life! The pursuit of Christ! Fresh revelations through His Word and through His Spirit, as He chooses to reveal.
Romans 11:33-36 reminds us of the treasures to be found in the depths of who God is.
“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor? Or who has first given to Him and it shall be repaid to Him? For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.” (NKJV)
As I was reading this, I pictured two rooms full of treasures. You know, like those hidden treasure caves that are miraculously discovered and overflowing with riches. I imagined a scene from the Jungle Book or the Goonies or Pirates of the Caribbean. (Yes, those are the first examples that popped into my head. Lol.) These two rooms represent wisdom and knowledge. Romans says that there is a DEPTH of the riches for BOTH wisdom and knowledge. One massive room overflowing with riches for each one! Often times, we get this idea that the Christian life should be easy and we should just “get it”. As if God promised us that things would be flawless and we would naturally be enlightened when we sought Him. Imagine though, two rooms overflowing with riches and gold and treasure and you get to go through them BOTH to get the DEPTH of His riches of wisdom and knowledge.
So, where do you start?!
Do you collect one piece at a time and carry it to a bucket to haul out? Do you grab the big things on the top and let the rest go? Or do you just dive in?! Stuffing as much as you can get in your pockets and bags and basking in the riches you have just discovered. Do you dig deeper into the pile searching for the depth of the riches, collecting as much as you possibly can?
We have ONE LIFETIME on this earth. There is SUCH a depth of the riches of both wisdom AND knowledge available through the Lord Jesus. Will we get it all? Will we obtain everything there is to obtain in this life? No, certainly not. BUT, I want to get ALL I possibly can in this lifetime. I don’t want to miss a single treasure He has for me. I don’t want to waste time carefully stacking each gold coin and counting up my riches. I just want to dive in and take what He has for me! It might be messy. It might look undignified. It might take a lot of diligence, searching, and waiting, but there is pleasure and joy to be found in HIS riches that the world cannot offer. This passage in Romans tells us that His ways are past finding out on our own. His judgments are unsearchable, not because we cannot search for Him with all of our hearts, as Jeremiah 29:13 tells us to do, but because there is no understanding or knowledge we can obtain apart from the revelation of God. He reveals what He wants, when He wants, to each of us. We only know Him as He reveals Himself to us. That is why we are ALL learning different things and each have a unique relationship with Him because He speaks to us in different ways. Our part to play is to stay in the treasure rooms. Keep searching, keep listening, and keep pursuing Him so we can be in position to receive His riches when He reveals them to us. Don’t leave the treasure behind! Don’t close the doors! Stay in there! Keep diving in! Even when you don’t feel like it, wait on Him! Rest in the treasure rooms! Rest in His wisdom and knowledge! In His presence we find satisfaction and joy and peace. Don’t give up when you don’t find that “one” piece of treasure you’re looking for. He IS the treasure. It is THERE that we find the depths we’re searching for.
We cannot fathom the riches and the depth of God, but we can visit the treasure rooms and search and wait for them there.
“I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me. Riches and honor are with me, enduring riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, and my revenue than choice silver.”
Proverbs 8:17-19
Below are some of the “treasures” I found in Nepal:
