Other things I discovered in the
Philippines:
One day we were doing construction,
digging holes in muddy clay. Right at the start we noticed a lot of
worms. Strangely though, some of the worms- actually a lot of them,
were black. I decided to investigate these strange creatures more
closely. I struggled to pick one up. It was faster and moved
different than a regular worm- the texture was different too- more
solid than squishy. Looking closely I realized that it had tiney
scales, and miniscule eyes and even a threadlike delicately forked
tongue! It was a TINY UNDERGROUND SNAKE!!!
On our free day one day we went to the
beach.- Well… there was no actual sand
at this beach, but there was something I found even better.
As the waves sloshed against the
rocks I noticed something moving….. lots of somethings
actually.
Closer inspection showed the creatures
looked kind-of tadpole-ish. About two inches long and moving by
kind-of hopping- they were WALKING FISH!!! too
cool!
The last evening we were in the PI
the sky was a textured gray overcast. As evening approached however,
the clouds took on a warm golden yellow illumination. This yellow
light was cast everywhere, on the buildings, the trees, even the air
caught the glow. Several of us took that cue to get as high up as
possible. When we got to the fourth floor of one of the buildings, we
saw the source of the yellow light. The sun was setting behind the
manilla skyline- more clear than we had yet seen it. It set in blue
sky, flanked by distant thunderheads building up over the sea. Above
us a front line covered the sky, catching the light of the setting
sun and hiding thunder in its darkness. As the rain began to fall it
too caught the evening glow. Threads of gold in the light. Thanks Dad
