I never really grasped the concept of "caring for widows."  Yes, in the bible it says to care for orphans and widows but I never really took it literally not because I never cared but because I didn't even know what that looked like.  In my mind I was thinking of old ladies unable to walk so what would I do, help them walk around?  I have no idea.  I guess that would work.  Well, today I finally came to the realization of what this may look like..and get ready……….it's pretty mind blowing.  Just kidding.  It's a lot easier than what I had pictured in my mind.

Today we went with our wonderful new friends, Denis and Shanon to a nearby village, then pulled up to a little home made out of sticks, red mud and plastered with cow dung.  When we arrived we were greeted by some children and a "widow."  Guess what, we came to care for widows.  What did we do today?  We took tools such as "hoes" and dug around her home to create a veranda to make the house more stable on a more firm foundation.  We also took sticks covered in leaves to create brooms and we swept the inside and outside of her red dirt home.  We used water from the nearby stream to wash dishes that we set down to dry on huge tree leaves.  We got to eat some delicious roasted corn that they made over the hot coals.  I also got to hold and fall in love with a little baby girl named Jaquira. (Not sure if that's how to spell it)

Yes, today we cared for the widowed.  I finally get it.  I now feel pretty stupid for not really getting it before.  I didn't think it would be that easy, practical and fun.  Just going to do these practical things.  It sounds so simple but it really was probably one of the best days I have had in a while.

Back in Kenya a few of us on our team were discussing how cool it would be to have a "bible doing" instead of a "bible study".  Why sit around and discuss what the bible is talking about doing instead of doing it right then and there.  Well here is the perfect example of it.  Go care for orphans and widows.  Our team just started studying the book of James, in the bible and I am now going to see if we can make this a "team norm".  Instead of just studying James lets figure out how we can right then go out and do what it says!

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, an he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father inherit the KINGDOM prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? And the King will answer them, 'Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'" Matt 25:31-40
