Dear mom,
This is the longest time and farthest distance we have ever been apart and I sure do miss you.
How can I put into words how much I love you? I don’t want this to be cheesy but I can’t make any promises…
Since I was a tiny baby with orange fuzz on my head you have tenderly cared for me. You were there to make sure I had a soft blanket wrapped around me and food in my belly. You held me when I cried and spent hours holding me in your arms when I’m sure sleep was the more favorable option. Since I was born you have sacrificed of yourself putting your own needs aside to make sure mine were met.
Mom, how could I ever forget how you tape recorded all the Junie B. Jones books just so Nicki and I could hear your voice every night when you and dad went to Hawaii. Or the way you made me my favorite cheese sandwiches on white bread with no crust in fun shapes. How can I forget being stoked to come home from kindergarten to sit with you and tell you about my day as we watched Arthur and read books.
Who can compare to that face that I knew my eyes would always find as I scanned the crowd at any dance or piano recital, school concert, or awards ceremony. Who was there to rub my back and dry my tears when I fell off the swingset or got picked on in school. To braid my hair every morning and pack me a lunch with a little note. Or to continually bring our family together with your delicious cooking.
A novel could never contain the memories we share. Door County campfires, beach days, and bike rides are some of my favorites. I love how we can talk for hours and it seems like minutes. I sure could go for a cup of coffee and a chat with you right about now.
Hey mom, remember when you told me you will always love me? Well, I believe you. That’s the thing, mom. Your love for me has never stopped or even wavered based on my actions. It has remained steadfast; as sure as the rising of the sun. I have seen you put your life on hold for me. Drop everything to come to my side. I hope I am half the joyful, selfless woman you are someday.
You are a safe place. Not just for me but for others too. You are trustworthy and non-judgmental. You don’t see what people are in their messes but what they could be. You have always seen and been the light in the darkness. And you are literally hilarious, mom. Did I mention it’s really hard not to have fun when you’re around?
You are truly an inspiration and role model. You aren’t afraid of hard work. You taught me that age is just a number and it’s never too late to overcome obstacles and pursue your dreams. And thanks for supporting my crazy dreams. I wouldn’t be here today without that.
Hey mom, I hope you get to eat a donut today. But only if it’s the good kind with the white cream. And I hope that today reminds you that everyday you are special, cherished, valued, and so appreciated. That you inspire others daily with your humility, gentleness, kindness, and wisdom. You are a beautiful reflection of Christ’s love and handiwork. I am so honored to call you my friend and my mom. Happy mothers day!
Love, Jenna
