Planting Seeds…with Socks

In the Bible there are two occasions when the service of washing someone’s feet is mentioned. The first time, in Luke 7:36-50, Jesus was at the home of Simon the pharisee, who had invited Jesus to eat with him, when a woman came who had lived a sinful life.  With her tears, hair, and perfume, she washed Jesus’ feet. For her willingness and humble heart Jesus forgave her for all of her sins. The second time that is mentioned is in John 13:1-20. This tells of when Jesus cleaned the feet of His apostles, including Judas.

While working with The Street Revolution, founder David Voncannon gave us the invitation to one day wash the feet of the people we visited on the streets and give them new pair of socks. While we hesitated on the idea at first, God humbled our hearts even more than He had the past couple of weeks, and He helped us come to a realization. The service goes beyond cleaning and give them new socks. It’s to also let them know that God, who is the ultimate healer and redeemer, will clean their sins, give them a new life, and throw their old life away when they accept Him and accept the life He has for them.

One of the messages Jesus gave after He was done washing His apostle feet was “14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” By example He encouraged and commanded us to love one another. The most amazing part for me while we were washing the feet is how many people stopped and watched what we were doing. These are the exact people that walk and pass by them without wanting any interaction. See, by example, we are not just planting seeds in the hearts of those who are getting their feet washed but also planting seeds in those who witnessed random foreigners taking care of their own people.

Dear readers, love is the biggest message Jesus delivered and commanded us to pass forward. He did it in many forms and showed many examples. My encouragement today is this: to take actions of love and plant seeds of Christ not only to those who you are ministering to but also to those who are watching.
