When you go to minister in another country, you expect it to be a different world. Clothing can carry many messages about who you are, what you are doing, and what you believe. Here at The World Race, we only have one rule – You are an adult. We plan to treat you like an adult and we expect you to act like adults. Because of that, we won’t take out a ruler and measure the exact length of your shorts. However, also because you are an adult, we expect you to receive feedback concerning your appearance.
That’s the rules. Plain and simple. However, we also understand that you need explanation about the cultures you are going to be joining. Because of that, we want to share some guidelines with you about how to dress. These guidelines are not only for ministry-wear, but all of the clothing you bring on the Race.
It’s good to have some of the clothes that make you happy (a favorite shirt, a great pair of jeans) but don’t bring anything that you can’t bear to lose or see stained.
- Maintain a clean appearance that represents The World Race and local missionaries well.
- Modesty is the key in all attire. This includes something modest to sleep in.
- No short, tight, or clinging clothing should ever be worn.
- Sleeveless shirts and tank tops that are 2″ wide are often acceptable on girls. No sleeveless shirt of any form is acceptable for guys. While this is OFTEN true, you should be prepared to have your shoulders and upper arms completely covered at all times in some locations.
- If your stomach or any undergarment shows, including when you raise your arms, leave it at home.
- For most of the time, shorts, skirts, and dresses should come to the top of the knee. Occasionally, you will need pants, skirts, and dresses that cover all the way to your ankles.
- On an extremely rare occasion you may be able to wear shorts, skirts, or dresses that are slightly above your knee.
- Bring a full coverage swim suit and think modest. Guys, normal swim trunks should be fine. Everyone should be prepared to wear longer shorts and a shirt over your swimsuit.
- Men need long pants in most cultural situations.
Depending on your location and the cultural norms of your location, we may need to adjust the dress code. In some countries it will be necessary for women to be in long skirts all the time. Tank Tops, no matter what size the strap, may not be appropriate in some locations. Some cultures view men in shorts as little boys and you will not receive the respect of an adult. When you arrive in a new location, it is best to always ask your local ministry contact about acceptable dress. The packing list will be a sufficient guideline to prepare for all cultures and climates. Any tattoos or piercings may need to be covered at times if it is offensive to the cultures or ministries. Your leaders will let you know this when you get in country. You will just be asked to cover the tattoo or take the earrings out temporarily.
