As I attempted to sleep sometime during our 75+ hr (12,583 mile) journey from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to Phnom Penh, Cambodia I overheard Lindsay’s conversation with the lady next to her on the plane. This lady was obviously very skeptical about life in general and doubtful that we had any lasting benefit during our last month in Haiti.  Lindsay replied, “Well…that’s why God created us…this World Race is about us exploring the unique giftings we each have and how we can participate in God’s redeeming work around the world”.  What still got her was ‘why a loving, all-powerful God would allow innocent, little children to suffer or even die?’.  She envied our faith but just couldn’t allow herself to believe in and worship that kind of God.

It is a tough question, but I believe we can’t just sit back in our easy-chair and find another news-blip to blame God for.  If anyone understands the death of their precious, innocent child it’s God.  I think the better question is, “Is there some bigger plan behind what we see with our eyes: the senseless violence, unstable economy and constant hunger we see in this world?”

YES!

God created us to love him and love our neighbour and DO something about this mess.  I don’t know about  you but giving up, calling it quits and settling for a much-deserved retirement of playing shuffleboard and collecting shells on the beach is not the way my story is going to end.

I can’t prevent 1 out of 2 marriages from ending in divorce, but I can be completely honest and faithful to my own wife.

I can’t put all the orphans of the world into loving families, but I can show them love (and maybe adopt one child someday).

I can’t end this world-wide economic crisis, but I can try to live within my means and support fair-trade businesses.

I can’t stop the wars going on all around the world, but I can take the time to meet someone from a different country or religion and hear their story.

I can’t provide safe drinking water for everyone on earth, but I can do my part to conserve, recycle materials and support well-digging projects.

I can’t stop hurricanes and earthquakes from happening, but I can help rebuild homes, businesses and communities…one brick at a time.
