Hello from Costa Rica! I had to sneak away to McDonald’s just to get wifi and update you guys. Our squad is without wifi for the month, so I will try to get you guys one more update before the month is over.
After a four day debrief in Jaco, Costa Rica my entire squad and I arrived in San Jose on the 6th. We are currently located in the slums of Los Guido on the outskirts of San Jose at a ministry called Christian Light Foundation. Mark and Meg Kudzu’s founded it 12 years ago after selling everything to become missionaries. They came to Los Guido after realizing that many of the churches or mission foundations in San Jose refused to come to Los Guido because it was too dangerous. Once there, they planted a church and opened up a feeding center that feeds kids lunch (their only hot meal of the day) six days a week.
After being here for a couple days, my heart cries for this community. The conditions that these people live in make Skid Row in Los Angeles look like Beverly Hills. Each day from 11-1 the kids come to get their lunch. We get to play with the kids and try to build relationship with them. The teams within the squad each have received their ministry assignment for the month. My team has been given the task to go into a local school in the slums. There we will most likely teach English, but we have yet to meet the staff and figure out what exactly we will be doing. In the meantime, my team and I have been taking prayer walks through the community on the way to the school.
My heart is just ready to love and proclaim God’s goodness to this community.
Prayer Requests:
-Mark told us that out of the three schools in the slums, we have the toughest one because of the staff’s hard heart to the gospel. Pray for the Lord to break down the walls
-80% of the kids in the slums are abused, 80%. More than likely living without a father in the home, so the mom is either not in the home because of work or drugs. That explains why we see countless older brother and sisters holding hands of their younger siblings, because they are probably taking care of them.
-Pray for God’s justice and mercy. It says a lot when the local taxi’s will refuse to take you to Los Guido because it is too dangerous. Fear runs the slums because of gangs, but there is obviously no fear of God.
Thank you and love you all
More to come at the end of the month!
