We were asked to write a blog about how we were called to this mission trip. Here is my story…
I am unable to pinpoint a moment in which God awesomely revealed to me that I was to be involved in missions. Looking back over my 28 years of existence, I can see that God was steering me toward that path. Growing up, I recall missionaries visiting my church, sharing their stories, and showing their slides of what missionary work is all about. I had a deep fascination and a sense of compassion for the people in the slides that seemed to have a life so much harder than mine. I was so impressed by the missionaries’ obedience to God’s call into the world. I grew up with the mentality that missionaries are “Super Christians”, you know, people that fall in the same category as Paul and Peter. Giving up their comfortable lifestyles in America to lead someone to Jesus Christ in a remote village in the Congo was truly impressive. It was some years later that I really began to grasp the meaning of the Great Commission (Matthew 28: 19-20, which states, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the very end of the age”). I came to the realization that the Great Commission didn’t apply to just the “Super Christians”. Jesus was speaking to ALL Christians, including me! I have been given a life-long assignment by the Lord and Creator of everything. How incredible is that?!
My next stop along this journey took me to Kenya, Africa where I experienced my first hands-on missions trip. I will never forget how easy it was to love and desire to serve the people that I met during the trip. I whole-heartedly believe that God was giving me a taste of what it’s like to be a missionary so that I would “crave” for more of the same.
