Funny story…So last night I am driving home from having dinner with a friend. As I am driving, I see something in the road in my lane, so I change lanes. There was something in that lane too and I hit it. It was a full size mattress. Seriously? It scared me so bad! But I kept driving, thought everything was fine. Then…I look in my rearview mirror and I see sparks coming from the back of my truck. I pull over to the shoulder and slightly panic. Let me tell you that I am not in the best part of town, and no where near anyone that I know. I get out to check out what was going on and see the mattress curled up under my truck, all of the springs stuck on parts of my truck. You’ve got to be kidding me right? When does this ever happen. I hope someone can say this has happened to them before. I honestly did not even know what to do. So of course…called my dad! Who’s in Abilene, 6 hours away and is obviously going to be a big help! His first suggestion was to call a boy. Like I said, I’m not near anyone. It would have taken at least 30 minutes for anyone to get to me. So then he suggests I call the police. I did. I tell them there wasn’t an emergency, but that I needed some help. 30 minutes later…(should have called one of my guys) they get to me. In the mean time, I have locked my doors and turned on my Christian radio station (I had previously been listening to ‘The Lovely Bones’ on cd and was a little creeped out) and prayed. Today it seems silly that I was so scared, but I was. When the police get there, I get out and they go to work. It takes them probably about 20 minutes to get the mattress free from my truck. They were just as irritated as I was that someone had left a mattress in the middle of the road. Crazy right?
The good news is that I got to spend some quality time in fear where all I could do was rely on God to keep me safe. I used to be one of those people who was a little bit cynical when people would find God in silly daily occurrences. I used to think they were just coincedences. I find so much more joy when you see that God has his Hand in everything. How wonderful that he can take anything and turn it into a joyful experience. I wasn’t feeling thankful last night during my mattress experience, but today I am thankful for my lesson in trusting God.
