I know this is a little late, but here’s what I’ve been doing since July 17 and will continue to do until August 15.
So our first month is in the Chaguarquinga sector of Quito. This sector is in the southern end of the city. We will be mainly working on building a church that is 3 stories tall and will house a school and something like a daycare center in it as well as the church. We will also be working with kids on the weekends and teaching some English, if I understood correctly.
We broke ground on the building today (7/18) and we started from scratch. There was a plot of ground, which you see in the pictures below, and we started digging for the foundation today. All that they want us to do is get the foundation work done this month because they don’t have the money to complete the rest of the building.
When we are not working on this building we are going to be just spending time with kids and stuff like that. Also on Saturdays, we are going to be helping to prepare for Sunday services, of which we will be a part of two of them while we are here.
Here are some pictures of the building plot and us breaking the ground and the following construction!!!!!
This is the view of the city of Quito at night from near where we’re staying.
One of my teammates, Ruth, and her crazy pick axe stance.
The dozer clearing the ground. Notice that all the wheels are off the ground.
The mountain that is covered in the clouds is actually a dormant volcano. This made me think of Psalm 97, “Clouds and thick darkness surround Him….”
These are locals working on their church building. The guy in the in the brown polo is the pastor, Fernando, and the guy next to him is the other guy on my team, Joshua, who is acting as our translator this month.
Its kinda hard to tell, but this is the trench we had to dig the first week we were there thats going to be a support for the back wall of the building, which is at the bottom of the hill.
More construction work. This is showing how the community is getting involved with us.
The lady in the green here is the wonderful lady that has been cooking all our breakfasts and lunches for us. The people here have been really wonderful and have taken us in like we are their family.
Well, thats all I have right now! I will post again soon with updates on how the construction has been going!
